A Back to School Survival Guide for Teachers, From People Also Winging It
July 16, 2026 · Barely Certified Club · teachers · back to school · gift guide
August is coming, which means teachers everywhere are about to transform from relaxed summer humans back into professionals who can sense a forgotten permission slip from forty feet. Here is the club's survival guide, written with the deep respect of people who once watched one teacher manage thirty children and a fire drill at the same time. The theme, as always: nobody feels ready, including the veterans, and the ones who own that do the best work.
Systems beat decorations
The Pinterest classroom is a trap. Kids do not remember the ceiling bunting, they remember whether the room felt predictable. Spend your setup energy on routines: how papers come in, how supplies go out, what students do the second they walk in the door. Teach those routines the whole first week like they are the curriculum, because they are. A boring room with strong systems runs better all year than a beautiful room running on vibes.
Stop funding the classroom yourself
Set a personal supply budget before the school year starts, a real number, and stop when you hit it. Post the wishlist link and let the parents who keep asking how to help actually help. Check what the PTA and your district actually reimburse, because a surprising amount goes unclaimed every year simply because nobody asks. Your paycheck is not a school funding source, no matter how normal the culture makes it feel.
Fully credentialed, professionally trained, still improvising by 10am daily. That is the job, and the shirt says so.

Boundaries are lesson plans for adults
Decide your email hours now, in the quiet of summer, because you will not decide them in October. Answering a parent at 9pm teaches every parent that 9pm is when you answer. Pick one weeknight that is completely school free and defend it like a planning period, which, speaking of: the planning period is sacred and constantly under siege, usually by meetings that could have been two sentences. Every teacher knows this. Guard it politely and relentlessly.
Say it without saying it in the staff lounge. The most agreed upon sentence in modern education.

The first week, honestly
Comfortable shoes, more water than you think, and lunch that does not come from the vending machine. Find your people fast, the grade team group chat is a survival tool, not a clique. And laminate the things you will reuse, seating charts, hall passes, anything a seventh grader can destroy, which is everything. The laminator jokes exist because the laminator works.
Twenty year veterans still get the night before jitters in August. Nobody is fully certified for a room of thirty kids. That is what makes the ones who show up anyway heroes.
Some heroes wear comfortable cotton and carry a tote bag full of ungraded quizzes.

Whether it is your first September or your twentieth, you are walking into that room barely certified for what it will throw at you, and you are walking in anyway. That is the whole club ethos. Welcome back.
