Running the water from solid ground. You pick a stretch of bank, read the cover, and start working the shoreline one cast at a time. No steering wheel is required to run this water. The kind of shirt that feels like you have owned it for years. Washed-in softness, a broken-in fit, and a design that says what you were already thinking. Wear it to the thing you are barely qualified for. The kind of shirt that feels like you have owned it for years. MORE FROM THE CLUB
THE REST OF THE CATCH
BARELY CERTIFIED CLUB
the fish are safe with us
Nobody got a practice round. Not at fishing, not at the whole being-a-person thing. Everyone on the water is improvising more than they let on, and everyone at the ramp rewatched a knot video in the truck at least once.
Take pride in that. You tie the knot, you lose the fish, you tell the story a little bigger, and you come back Saturday. That is what the tees are for: wearing the truth of it before anyone at the dock can ask how it went.
Because the more of us who say it out loud, the less pressure there is on everyone to pretend. Fishing gets lighter when nobody has to act like they limit out every trip. So does everything else.
