Every hobby has its lies. Golf has the gimme. Running has the last mile. Fishing runs on lies the way boats run on gas, and every angler tells the same five. Ranked here from most innocent to most legally binding.
5. I am leaving at noon
Said with full sincerity at 6am. Noon comes and goes. The sun moves. Someone texts. The truth is that noon was never a time, it was a negotiating position, and the fish have not signed anything.
4. I do not even care if I catch anything
Beautiful sentiment. Completely false. If it were true you would not have checked the wind forecast three times last night or retied the same jig twice before sunrise. You care. It is fine. We all care.
3. That spot is fished out
Translation: I caught nothing there. The spot is fine. The spot has been holding fish since before you were born. The spot will be holding fish tomorrow when the guy who does not tell this lie pulls a limit off it.
2. It was THIS big
The only fish in history that grows after it dies. Every retelling adds an inch and removes a witness. By Thanksgiving it takes two hands to describe and by spring it broke the rod. There is a shirt for this condition.
